James O'Brien‘s poetry and fiction have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies. In 2011, his short story "Bing Red" won second prize in The Pinch's 2011 Literary Awards, and he was named a Poetry Fellow at the St. Botolph Club, in Boston. O’Brien is a Ph.D. candidate at the Editorial Institute at Boston University, researching Bob Dylan's other-than-song writings — focusing on unpublished works and those writings given only limited distribution. In collaboration with Ray Carney, O'Brien is writing an annotated bibliography of works about the filmmaker John Cassavetes for Oxford University Press: Oxford Bibliographies Online. He is an adviser to the New England Folk Music Archives.
